As a newly-minted company officer on a small rural department, I was seeking a resource to further my training beyond the Firefighter II level. I looked at the required reading lists for promotion on a number of career departments and chose this book. It proved ideal for my purpose, and I highly recommend it to any fire officer. As textbooks go, this is eminently readable. Unlike the IAFC "Fundamentals of Firefighter Skills" text, which is written by committee and broken into stand-alone chunks, Chief Norman's book has a real narrative flow to it. It is still very technical, but the organization of the book is very thoughtful and polished, and anecdotes from Chief Norman's career keeps it moving without going off on tangents too badly. The density level is good, no fluff but not so dense as to require that you read the same sentence five times to unpack the meaning, either. There are also many interesting photographs, clearly collected over a very long career. At times you have the feeling of sitting down with an old salt and going through the scrapbook, which I found very enjoyable. The illustrations and tables are nothing amazing but they are clear and used liberally. Anything that can be presented visually is given a chart, table, or photo.Chief Norman's perspective is definitely that of an urban firefighter, and a lot of this book is dedicated to various types of high-rise multiple occupancies and commercial properties, with the presence of arial devices, automated suppression systems in commercial occupancies, and hydrants taken for granted. However, he does an excellent job of addressing a much broader audience, and of presenting lessons drawn from his career in the New York metro area in such a way as to make them relevant to firefighters everywhere. Even as an officer on a rural company without an arial ladder, I still found the Ladder Company Ops chapter perfectly applicable. That is really saying something.Until I read this book I didn't realize just how influential it is. Readers who have done a good amount of one and two-day training classes at regional fire schools will probably recognize a few courses they have taken in the past as coming directly from Chief Norman's text. I took a course in RIT tactics last spring that left me thinking "wow, this is amazing, where did these instructors get all this from?" Answer: Fire Officer's Handbook of Tactics. This book seems to be a repository for a lot of the tried-and-true tactics that guys who have been around for a while seem to know, but don't show up in the IAFC FF1/FF2 curriculum. This alone makes it invaluable. For anyone looking to expand their knowledge beyond the IAFC FF1/2 curriculum, especially anyone serving in a company officer capacity, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I only wish I had bought my own copy and didn't have to return this to the department library when I completed it.
This book is an excellent source of information. I originally bought it for a promotional exam, but as I read it, I was constantly finding the information for back step firefighters as well as officers. After buying this new edition, I gave my 3rd Edition to my new probie to read through. Chief Norman is a great example of a well-rounded fire protection professional having extensive experience in both fire protection and safety engineering as well as firefighting. The new edition has more information, illustraions/captions explaining main ideas, and is better organized than the previous edition. Excellent resource for any rank and experience level.
This Study Guide is NOT worth two cents. Questions are not asked correctly. So many grammatical errors and the content itself does not correlate with the text book. The text book is great. You’re better of making your own questions off of the content from the textbook rather than purchasing the study guide, that is what I did. I should have listened to other reviews on this book. The way the questions were asked will only confuse you. I took Orgainc Bio Chem, scored an A, and this book to me is harder due to how the questions were written. The sentences don’t even make sense. Good Luck to all my fellow brothers. Be Safe.
Purchased for Fire department promotional exam. The book was required reading.Halfway through reading and am learning a great deal of information. It does get a little dry at times but much better than most promotional books.Chief Norman shares a lot of great on the job experiences. Not only does he tell you but also explains how to get it done.
This book is chock full of interesting anecdotes and techniques. Some are very unique scenarios to New York and will not help you at all in small town, USA. It is still very interesting to see how other places do things. I think it's best read outside of promotion as just a student of the fire service.
Don't like this book at all. I figured it would have outlines of each chapter to help you study but all it has are tests.. The questions are extremely tricky and you almost feel less confident after doing them and that's not exactly what you need before taking a promotional exam. There were some questions that were straightforward knowledge questions and they were fine. The other questions seemed more to confuse you then to test your knowledge. Save your money and just read the book
Over 30 hours of audio. I rotate the CD's though the stereo in my truck, listen while driving. Keeps me on my game.
I was recently promoted and while in LT school this book was recommended by several different officers. When chiefs & captains with 30+ years tell you this is a must read, take heed. I am still making my way through this book and reference it often when I have a question. Easy to read. I work for an urban fire department with around 4,000 career firefighters, so the tactics used are similar to what we see here, as far as command structure, response personnel and building construction. I will be reading and re-reading this book for years to come as I try to navigate what I'm told is the hardest transition in the fire department, from a single minded fire fighter to seeing the "big picture" tactics of an officer.
